Israel Fires Retaliatory Rockets After Syrian Attacks

The ongoing conflicts between Israel and Syria have recently gained prominence due to retaliatory rocket attacks initiated by Israel. These attacks were a response to the launch of three rockets towards Israel from Syria. The tense situation has prevailed for several months, with concerns being raised after the election of an ultra-nationalist government in Israel. This situation was further exacerbated by Israel’s raid on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, leading to a series of rocket attacks launched from Lebanon, Gaza Strip, and Syria.

The Fear of Israel and Iran’s Involvement

Israel is apprehensive that Iran, its arch-enemy, is using the long-running war in Syria as leverage to position its fighters and weapons near Israeli borders. Israel has been proactive in conducting strikes in Syria, targeting Iranian-linked figures and infrastructure, like the airports in Damascus and Aleppo.

The Timeline of the Israel-Syria Conflict

The Israel-Syria conflict traces back to the Six-Day War in 1967 when Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria. During the Yom Kippur War, Syrian forces unsuccessfully attempted to retake the area. In 1981, Israel brought the Golan Heights Law into effect, essentially annexing the area. This led to a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution declaring this imposition null and void.

Syrian Civil War and Its Escalation

The longstanding conflict further intensified with the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Iran, denying Israel’s right to exist, emerged as a key player in the conflict, supplying weapons and financial aid to support the Syrian regime. As a consequence, rockets sometimes land in Israel as “errant fire” during the Syrian warfare.

Targeted Strikes in Syria and their Consequences

Israel is frequently accused of carrying out targeted strikes in Syria, although it publicly denies them. The recent surge in attacks raises concerns about an escalation in the conflict, potentially destabilising the already volatile region.

India’s Stance on the Israel-Syria Conflict

India maintains a balanced stance on the Israel-Syria conflict, advocating for peaceful negotiations and exercise of restraint. India has always supported Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, also opposing any external interference in its internal affairs.

Implications of the Israel-Syria Conflict for India

The conflict between Israel and Syria could significantly impact India, primarily through energy security. Being heavily reliant on oil imports from the Middle East, including Syria, any disruption in the oil supply chain could detrimentally affect the Indian economy.

The Way Forward: Potential Solutions

On an international level, the Syrian conflict is viewed as a proxy war involving major powers like the US, Russia, and Iran, each supporting different sides in the conflict. A comprehensive approach addressing the root causes of the conflict is required. Diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict could involve engaging with all parties involved, including regional and international actors.

The Abraham Accords: An Example of Regional Cooperation

Regional cooperation and dialogue could be another solution to reduce tensions and build trust among parties in the conflict. The Abraham Accords, signed between Israel and several Arab states, could serve as a positive model for such cooperation and dialogue.
