India is launching a new initiative, spearheaded by the Health Ministry in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The project, known as “India’s 100 Food Streets Initiative,” seeks to develop 100 food streets in 100 districts across the country. This article will illuminate key details about this innovative initiative, along with other notable events including the 16th Civil Services Day and recent talks between Major Economies Forum leaders on climate action.
India’s 100 Food Streets Initiative: Promoting Healthy Food Practices
The 100 Food Streets Initiative has been created with the primary aim of promoting safe and healthy practices within the food industry. By doing so, the plan is to reduce instances of food-borne illnesses and enhance overall health outcomes. As an initial step, the project will be implemented as a pilot scheme to demonstrate best practices for food businesses.
The success of this initiative will not only strengthen the “eat right campaign” and enhance food safety, but it will also boost the credibility of local food businesses. The benefits extend to creating employment opportunities, boosting tourism potential, and strengthening the economy.
The National Health Mission (NHM), in conjunction with MoHUA and with technical support from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), will implement this initiative. Each food street/district will receive financial assistance of ₹1 crore, with the NHM providing aid in the ratio of 60:40 or 90:10. All projects will adhere to standard branding according to FSSAI guidelines.
Civil Services Day: Recognizing the Vital Role of Civil Servants
The Vice-President of India recently addressed a gathering of civil servants at the 16th Civil Services Day (CVD) held in New Delhi. The day, marked on 21st April every year, commemorates the first time when the first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers back in 1947. Patel famously referred to civil servants as the ‘Steel Frame of India’.
During this gathering, emphasis was placed on the essential role played by civil servants in ensuring the inclusive development of the nation. Civil servants were reminded of their crucial role in facilitating uniformity across Union and State administrations, fostering cooperative federalism.
Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Change: A Call for Joint Climate Action
A recent virtual meeting of Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate Change brought together Heads of State and Ministers from 20 major economies worldwide. The discussion addressed the urgency of climate action and highlighted Indian Prime Minister’s call for LiFE – a lifestyle for environment.
The Indian Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change underscored India’s leadership in combating climate change. He pointed out that India’s per capita emissions are one-third of the global average, and emphasized initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors.
Heat Index: A Key Indicator of Perceived Heat
The heat index, an important indicator that factors in both air temperature and humidity, is vital in understanding the perceived heat experienced by people. In April 2022, Delhi’s heat index reached dangerous levels of 44oC to 49oC – a category designated as “danger” by the US National Weather Service. This classification suggests potential risks including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and possible heat stroke during continued activity.
The vulnerability towards heat-related dangers is particularly high among the slum population due to their inadequate access to amenities, poor housing conditions, and lack of healthcare and health insurance. There’s a direct relationship between air temperature, relative humidity and the heat index – as the former increase or decrease, so does the latter.
