Dust-Raising Winds Surge PM10 Levels in Delhi

In recent times, Delhi experienced a significant increase in Particulate Matter (PM) 10 levels, leading to a surge in dust and a reduction in visibility due to strong winds. The India Meteorological Department(IMD) attributed these dust-raising winds to low rainfall, increased heating, and gusty winds dominating in the previous days. The soaring temperatures, which stayed consistently above 40 degrees Celsius, caused the dry soil to be suspended in the air because of these powerful winds.

These wind conditions resulted in PM10 levels that were 19 times higher than the standard for a 24-hour period. PM2.5 levels also showed an upsurge. Consequently, most monitoring stations categorized Delhi’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) as ‘very poor’ or ‘poor’. Inhalable particulate matter present in the air can trigger respiratory issues, including coughing and asthma.

Dry conditions and elevated wind speeds were identified as the chief causes of dust in summer. Despite this, the sub-committee responsible for executing actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) refrained from taking measures, projecting an improvement in the situation in the coming days.

Bangladesh Withdraws “Extra Security Escort” for Diplomats

Bangladesh has decided to pull back the additional security provided to top diplomats from nations including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. The decision, based on the country’s well-maintained law and order situation, deemed such security measures unnecessary and discriminatory. These enhanced security measures had been implemented in response to a militant attack in 2016.

The foreign minister emphasized that the current law and order situation does not necessitate added security for specific envoys. He suggested that private security services could be employed if required. Usual security measures for diplomatic missions will be maintained in accordance with international conventions.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 is an integral part of diplomatic security. It provides the framework for diplomatic relations between sovereign countries, ensuring the safety and efficient operation of diplomatic missions and personnel.

Indigenous Dengue Vaccine Trials in India

Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers, Serum Institute of India, and Panacea Biotec have submitted applications to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for Phase-III clinical trials of their indigenous dengue vaccines. This marks a significant stride towards creating India’s first vaccine against dengue.

Dengue virus disease places a considerable global health load, with India reporting between 2 to 2.5 lakh cases each year. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified dengue as one of the top ten global health threats. With no current specific treatment for dengue, the necessity for effective vaccines is urgent.

Sikkim’s Statehood Day

Sikkim’s Statehood Day is an annual celebration held on May 16 that commemorates Sikkim’s unification with India and its establishment as the country’s 22nd state in 1975. Sikkim’s integration was made possible by the 36th Amendment of the Indian Constitution.

From being a British protectorate to gaining its statehood, Sikkim’s history is rich and varied. After India gained independence, Sikkim was considered a protectorate, albeit enjoying administrative independence under the Chogyal rulers. Changes in governance led to Sikkim becoming an “associated state” in 1973. In 1975, Sikkim was granted statehood, which incorporated it into India and abolished the monarchy.
