The 2023 Asian Athletics Championships recently began in Thailand, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Asian Athletics Association which was established in 1973. This year’s events have a special addition – the revered Hindu god Hanuman has been chosen as the official mascot.
Official Mascot and Logo Unveiled
The spirit of the Asian Athletics Championship 2023 is reflected in both its mascot and the event’s logo. Hanuman represents strength, agility, and perseverance, characteristics inherent to athletics. The logo, meanwhile, encapsulates the essence of the games, indicating the participating athletes, their skills, dedication, sportsmanship, and the overall team spirit.
This year, nine countries – Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and India – are set to showcase their athletic prowess.
Ambergris: The Floating Gold Found in Whales
In other fascinating news, a large deposit of “floating gold” or ambergris was recently discovered in a dead whale that had washed up on Spain’s La Palma island. A product of the sperm whale’s digestive system, ambergris is an extremely high-value substance widely sought in the perfume industry.
Only about 1% of sperm whales produce this waxy, solid substance, which chemically contains alkaloids, acids, and ambrein – a compound similar to cholesterol. Ambergris can float in water bodies and occasionally wash ashore due to its lightness.
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), characterized by its dark blue-gray or brownish color with white patches on the belly, is found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List, they are also protected under Appendix I of CITES and Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Indian Railway Financial Code Revamped for Safety Prioritization
In response to a tragic train accident in Balasore, Odisha, the Indian Railway Financial Code has undergone a major revision. The amendment aims to prioritize safety-related projects, particularly those aiming to enhance signaling systems.
Previously, all railway projects had to meet certain financial viability criteria. However, with the new modifications, signaling works are exempted from financial remunerativeness and are instead categorized under ‘Safety’.
This change implies that crucial infrastructure improvements, including the anti-collision system Kavach, Electronic Interlocking, and others such as mobile train communications systems, Remote Diagnostic and Predictive Maintenance Systems, technology upgrades, and automatic Train Management Systems, will not be subject to financial viability standards.
INS Sunayna’s Participation in Op Southern Readiness 2023
In recent naval developments, INS Sunayna participated in Op Southern Readiness 2023. Conducted by the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in Seychelles from July 10-12, 2023, this was a significant move towards strengthening multilateral ties and promoting cooperation in the maritime domain.
The CMF, a multinational maritime partnership, counters illicit non-state actors on the high seas and fosters security, stability, and prosperity across approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, including some of the world’s most vital shipping lanes. With 38 member nations, including India, the CMF upholds the Rules-Based International Order (RBIO).
Designed for fleet support operations, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance, monitoring of Sea Lines of Communications and offshore assets, and escort duties, INS Sunayna marks the second Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel (NOPV) class of ship to participate.
