India Celebrates 200th Birth Anniversary of Shri Ramalinga Swamy

India recently commemorated the monumental 200th birth anniversary of Shri Ramalinga Swamy, widely known as Vallalar, a luminary personality of the 19th century, on October 5, 2023. Born in the humble village of Marudhur in Tamil Nadu, Vallalar, an eminent Tamil poet, is revered for his multifaceted contributions to society and his invaluable teachings that resonate with mankind even to this day. This article delves into the intriguing life, vision, and philosophies of Vallalar.

Life and Legacy of Shri Ramalinga Swamy

Vallalar was not merely a poet, but also a significant member of the “gnana siddhars” lineage – the enlightened sages. His verse and compositions encompassed profound wisdom and spiritual insights that continue to inspire poets and spiritual seekers alike. However, Vallalar’s contributions extended far beyond literature.

Visionary Social Reforms

The social reforms initiated by Vallalar were groundbreaking and far-sighted. He imagined a world that transcended barriers of religion, caste, and creed, recognizing divinity in every atom of the universe.

His strong stance against the caste system led to the initiation of ‘Samarasa Vedha Sanmarga Sangam’ in 1865, which was subsequently renamed ‘Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam.’ His visionary efforts also led to the establishment of ‘The Sathya Dharma Salai,’ a facility providing free food to all people, irrespective of their caste, in Vadalur, Tamil Nadu in 1867. Additionally, in January 1872, Vallalar undertook the noble initiative of opening the ‘Sathya Gnana Sabha’ (Hall of True Knowledge) in Vadalur, aiming to spread enlightenment and wisdom to one and all.

Philosophical Teachings: The Path to Liberation

One of Vallalar’s central teachings revolved around the concept that “Service to Living Beings is the path of Liberation/Moksha.” This forms the cornerstone of his Suddha Sanmarga philosophy, which postulates that the key aspects of human life should be love, charity, spiritual practice, culminating in pure knowledge.

Vallalar was of the firm belief that the intelligence man possesses is illusory (Maya) and not the ultimate truth. He proposed that true intelligence lay in “Jeeva Karunyam” (Compassion for living beings). He strongly condemned the killing of animals for food and proposed feeding the poor as the most noble form of worship.

At the heart of Vallalar’s teachings was the belief that God in the form of Grace symbolizes Mercy and Knowledge, and that the path to God is through mercy. His life, vision, and teachings have left an indelible mark on society and continue to inspire millions across the globe.
