UNSC Approves Kenya-led Mission to Stabilize Haiti

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has recently given a green light to the Multinational Security Mission (MSS), spearheaded by Kenya. The primary goal of this operation is to reclaim stability, fortify essential infrastructure, and curb escalating violence in Haiti.

Haiti’s Cry for Emergency Assistance

Haiti has been embroiled in an escalating crisis due to rampant gang violence that has unleashed havoc, fear, and distress nationwide. The central fuel port and capital city, Port-au-Prince, have been majorly disrupted by a conglomerate of gangs known as “G9 and Family”. This gang-related tumult has led to a national emergency, culminating in the estimated murder of 2,800 people from October 2022 to June 2023.

Not only has there been a surge in killings, but human rights organizations have also recorded an alarming increase in sexual offenses and crimes against women. The turmoil doesn’t end here – extensive looting and arson incidents have forced thousands to abandon their homes, with close to 200,000 individuals fleeing for safety.

According to projections, almost half of the population currently requires humanitarian aid. In response to this dire situation, the Prime Minister of Haiti pleaded for international assistance, specifically requesting specialized armed forces to tackle the gang menace and their supporters.

The Role of the Multinational Security Mission

In contrast to the previous UN peacekeeping mission that concluded its operations in Haiti in 2017, the fresh MSS will function independently of the United Nations. Kenya has stepped up to steer this force, acquiring backing from other nations including Bahamas, Jamaica, and Antigua and Barbuda.

The MSS’s responsibilities encompass providing tactical support to the Haitian National Police, improving security conditions, safeguarding vital infrastructure, and assisting in conducting elections. Additionally, the forces have been granted the authority to make arrests, in alliance with the Haitian police.

Haiti: The Land and Its People

Haiti is nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola. It shares the eastern border of the island with the Dominican Republic. In terms of its geographical neighbours, Haiti has Jamaica to the west and Cuba to the northwest.

This culturally-rich country recognizes French and Haitian Creole as its official languages. The Massif de la Selle and the Massif du Nord are among its significant mountain ranges. Of historical note, Haiti is recognized as the world’s first independent Black-led republic, after enduring roughly two centuries of Spanish colonial rule and over a century of French rule.
