Indonesia Celebrates National Heroes Day, Commemorating 1945 Battle of Surabaya

The history of Indonesia and the celebration of National Heroes Day commences with the renowned Battle of Surabaya. Taking place from 1945 to 1949, this battle became a symbol of resistance for the Indonesian nationalists against British and British Indian forces. The fight for independence from Dutch colonial influence was an important chapter in Indonesian history.

The Battle of Surabaya: A Struggle for Independence

Taking place on the 10th of November, the Battle of Surabaya is remembered as a day of valor and sacrifice. This battle marked the confrontation between Indonesian nationalists and British and British Indian Forces after the end of World War II. When Japan surrendered, Indonesian patriots seized the opportunity to assert their independence, which was not recognized by the Dutch. This refusal led to a conflict, resulting in several years of war. Despite the heavy fighting, the city of Surabaya ultimately fell under the control of the British and British Indian forces.

The Supreme Court on Firecracker Use and Pollution

In a bid to combat escalating levels of air and noise pollution, the Supreme Court of India has reiterated the importance of responsible celebrations. Highlighting that its mandates must be adhered to by all states, the court emphasizes a commitment to reducing pollution levels throughout the year. In particular, the court advocates for responsible Diwali celebrations, ensuring that festivities do not harm environmental health.

Artificial Rain Project: A Solution to Delhi’s Pollution Crisis?

To address growing concerns about pollution in Delhi, the local government together with IIT-Kanpur has been exploring the use of artificial rain through cloud seeding. Preliminary projects during monsoon months have shown promising results. The endeavour requires at least 40% cloud and moisture coverage for effective outcomes. It is expected that favorable conditions for continued trials will fall on November 20 and 21, 2023. The project involves the use of silver iodide and other substances, distributed via aircraft. The success of the plan relies heavily on factors like moisture availability and rainfall levels.

INDUS-X Investors Meet: Innovation in Defence

The Innovations for Defence Excellence(iDEX) and the US Department of Defence have come together to launch the inaugural INDUS-X Investors Meet in New Delhi. This gathering aims to foster innovation in defence technology and collaboration between India and the US. As part of the event, the INDUS-X Educational Series (Gurukul) was introduced. This initiative offers guidance to innovators and startups navigating the defence industry landscape. Panel discussions during the meet signaled investment opportunities and laid the groundwork for sustainable commercial collaboration and co-production. The INDUS-X initiative, launched in June 2023, is a testament to the growing strategic partnership between India and the US in the realm of defence technology and industry cooperation.
