Following the identification of Stellaria mcclintockiae in Kerala, another species named Stellaria bengalensis has been discovered in Kalimpong, West Bengal. Identification of Stellaria Bengalensis

Stellaria bengalensis is an annual herb from the Caryophyllaceae family. It was found in the Sangser forest at altitudes ranging from 2,245 to 2,450 metres. Characteristics of Stellaria Bengalensis

Stellaria bengalensis grows to a height of 8 to 10.5 cm. It features white flowers and lacks bracts. The petals are shorter and often included within the sepals. The plant produces sharp, pointed seeds. Its flowering and fruiting season is from May to September.

India is home to approximately 22 Stellaria species, mainly in the Himalayan region. Stellaria bengalensis has been assessed as ‘data deficient’ according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria.
