Tripura Gramin Bank Launches Solar ATM Van

Tripura Gramin Bank Launches Solar ATM Van

Tripura Gramin Bank has become the first Gramin Bank in India to introduce a solar-powered ATM van. The initiative marks a notable step in sustainable banking and financial inclusion, especially for rural and hard-to-reach areas of Tripura. The bank has also received the SKOCH Silver Award for this innovation, recognising its contribution to governance and service delivery.

National First in Rural Banking

Tripura Gramin Bank’s solar-powered ATM van is being seen as a pioneering model in the regional banking sector. It is designed to provide banking access in areas where regular electricity supply is limited or unreliable. The bank currently operates three such vans.

Financial Inclusion in Remote Areas

The bank has around 150 branches spread across remote and interior parts of Tripura. Its branch network and mobile ATM service support financial inclusion, cash access, and basic banking services for rural communities. The initiative helps reduce dependence on fixed infrastructure.

Recognition and Inauguration

The solar ATM van initiative was inaugurated on 21 July 2023 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her visit to Tripura. The SKOCH Silver Award has added national recognition to the bank’s innovative practices. The award is considered one of the important honours in governance and public service innovation.

Significance for Sustainable Banking

The use of solar power makes the ATM van an eco-friendly solution for banking delivery. It combines renewable energy with mobile financial access, making it relevant for discussions on green banking, rural development, and technology-led inclusion. The initiative may serve as a model for other regional rural banks in India.
