Aarogya Setu App Code Goes Open Source on GitHub

Introduction
The Aarogya Setu Mobile App, India’s digital tool for COVID-19 contact tracing, has recently seen its source code made open source for software developers. Uploaded on GitHub, the code’s transparency will enable developers to identify and rectify any vulnerabilities or areas for improvement to make Aarogya Setu more robust and secure.

Aarogya Setu: An Overview

Aarogya Setu was launched by India as a key resource to help curb the spread of Covid-19. It enables Bluetooth based contact tracing, maps likely hotspots, and disseminates relevant information about Covid-19. Despite its usefulness, concerns have been raised about the app’s transparency leading the government to release the app’s code-set on GitHub to address these issues.

Open Sourcing Aarogya Setu

Making the app open source means that the design of its source code is publicly accessible, open to modification and sharing. Source code is the part of the software that computer programmers use to adjust the functions and workings of an app. By releasing the app’s source code, programmers can improve the app by adding features.

The Importance of Open Source Collaboration

Enabling collaboration among talented young developers and citizens through open source can lead to the creation of more robust and secure technology solutions. This in turn supports the work of frontline health workers in combating the pandemic. In line with this objective, the National Informatics Centre has also initiated a Bug Bounty Programme.

Challenges Involved

Releasing the source code of a product that is constantly evolving and used by millions requires regular source code maintenance. Coping with frequent updates in the app using new technology also presents a challenge.

Bug Bounty Programme

The programme aims to collaborate with security researchers and the Indian developer community to test Aarogya Setu’s security efficacy and enhance its reliability while building user trust. It encourages Indian developers to find and report security flaws in the app, offering a reward of Rs 1 lakh for their efforts.

How Open Source Benefits Moving Forward

Making the app open source will facilitate the development of a transparent mechanism for obtaining public data regarding Covid-19. This move addresses privacy concerns by enabling the addition of new features to the app, creating a more robust system.
