Adani Group Expresses Interest in Krishnapatnam Port

India’s Adani Group, a conglomerate with diverse interests ranging from ports to power, has set its sights on the significant potential of the Krishnapatnam Port. Located in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh, this minor port is not only steeped in history but also holds great strategic importance in India’s maritime commerce due to its location on the country’s east coast.

Krishnapatnam Port’s Legacy

The Krishnapatnam Port boasts a rich legacy that dates back to the reign of the famed Vijayanagara Emperor, Sri Krishnadevaraya, who actively operated this port. Named after this influential monarch, it served as a critical gateway for trade and commerce during his rule.

The port’s increasing importance caught the attention of the Government of India, leading them to declare it a ‘minor port’ in the 1980s. Although the Union Government is primarily responsible for developing the 12 Major Ports in the country, minor ports like Krishnapatnam come under the jurisdiction of their respective State Governments.

Vijayanagar Empire: Foundation and Influential Emperors

Founded by Harihara and Bukka of the Sangama dynasty in 1336 AD, the Vijayanagar Empire was named so after its heartland city, Vijayanagara, or the “city of victory”. The empire’s capital, Hampi, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 in recognition of its significant historical and cultural importance.

The expansive Vijayanagar Empire stretched from the Krishna river in the north to the extreme south of the Indian subcontinent. It was governed by four crucial dynasties – Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva, and Aravidu. Among these dynasties, the Tuluva dynasty’s most notable ruler was Krishnadevaraya, who ruled from 1509 to 1529.

Krishnadevaraya’s leadership was defined by strategic expansion and consolidation. He has been acknowledged for constructing several exquisite temples and for adding grand gopurams (towering monuments found at the entrance of South Indian temples) to many significant south Indian temples.
