In October 2024, the Indian Army’s Sudarshan Chakra Corps commenced ‘Exercise SWAVLAMBAN SHAKTI’ at Babina Field Firing Ranges near Jhansi. This exercise, running until October 22, focuses on integrating niche and emerging technologies into military operations. With a participation of around 1,800 personnel and a diverse array of vehicles and aviation assets, the exercise aims to enhance the Army’s combat capabilities and readiness for future warfare scenarios.

The Sudarshan Chakra Corps

The Sudarshan Chakra Corps, headquartered in Bhopal, is one of the Indian Army’s key strike corps. Established to conduct rapid offensive operations, it plays a critical role in the Army’s overall strategic framework. The corps is named after the Sudarshan Chakra, a divine weapon associated with Lord Krishna, symbolising strength and precision. This historical context underscores the Corps’ commitment to modernising its operational capabilities while honouring its cultural heritage.

Integration of New Technologies

‘Exercise SWAVLAMBAN SHAKTI’ is decisive in integrating New Technology Equipment (NTEs) into military tactics. The exercise showcases over 50 NTEs sourced from more than 40 industry partners, including Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs and emerging defence startups. This collaboration aims to identify critical technologies for future procurement and development. The integration of advanced technologies, such as swarm drones and directed energy weapons, represents a shift towards more sophisticated, technology-driven military strategies.

Key Technologies Under Evaluation

Among the technologies being evaluated during the exercise are: – Swarm Drones: These are small, networked drones that can operate collaboratively, providing enhanced reconnaissance and offensive capabilities. – Kamikaze Drones: Designed for precision strikes, these drones can autonomously target and destroy enemy assets. – Logistic Swarm Drones: These drones facilitate supply chain logistics, enabling rapid resupply in combat zones. – Robotic Mules and All-Terrain Vehicles: These vehicles support troop mobility and logistics in challenging terrains, improving operational efficiency. The exercise also features advanced communication systems, such as Software Defined Radio-based Mobile Adhoc Networks, which enhance battlefield communication and coordination.

Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

A objective of the exercise is to bolster India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. By involving young entrepreneurs and MSMEs, the exercise provides a platform for showcasing innovative solutions in drone and anti-drone technologies. This focus aligns with the Government of India’s push for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India), aiming to reduce dependence on foreign military imports and promote domestic production.

Future Warfare Preparedness

As warfare evolves, the integration of technology becomes paramount. The Indian Army’s proactive approach in exercises like SWAVLAMBAN SHAKTI positions it to meet future challenges effectively. By prioritising the incorporation of advanced technologies, the Army is not only enhancing its combat readiness but also adapting to the rapidly changing landscape of global military strategies.

Strategic Implications

The implications of such exercises extend beyond immediate military applications. They signify a broader strategic shift towards a tech-centric military doctrine, which could influence regional security dynamics. As nations increasingly invest in military technology, the balance of power in South Asia may be affected, necessitating a reevaluation of defence strategies among neighbouring countries.
