Air India Boeing 777 Safety Mechanisms Under Scrutiny

The Bombay High Court recently mandated the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to investigate safety concerns regarding Air India’s Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. These planes operate long-haul flights between the United States and India. The court’s directive arose after a pilot raised alarms about the aircraft’s oxygen supply during decompression scenarios.

The issue began when a 55-year-old pilot from Mumbai refused to fly a specific route on January 30, 2023. He cited safety concerns related to the aircraft’s oxygen supply. Following his refusal, Air India grounded him and later terminated his employment in May 2023. Pilot’s Safety Concerns

The pilot argued that the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, acquired from Delta Airlines, lacked adequate oxygen supply for long-haul flights, particularly over mountainous regions. He claimed that the aircraft’s stored oxygen supply, which lasts only 12 minutes, was insufficient for passenger and crew safety during emergencies. According to him, regulations require more than 12 minutes of oxygen for all individuals on board.

The pilot asserted that the aircraft violated DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) and safety regulations. He brought into light that in the event of cabin depressurisation, descending to a safe altitude of 10,000 feet within the stipulated 12 minutes was unrealistic. DGCA’s Initial Response

In January 2024, the DGCA imposed a fine of ₹1.1 crore on Air India for non-compliance with safety regulations. However, the appellate authority upheld this decision without addressing the pilot’s broader concerns about passenger safety. The pilot subsequently approached the Bombay High Court to challenge these decisions.

The court, presided over by Justices B P Colabawalla and Somasekhar Sundaresan, noted that the orders from the DGCA lacked clarity on the issues involved. The judges emphasised that the case was not merely a dispute between the pilot and the airline. It raised questions about flight safety and public welfare. The court directed the DGCA to reconsider the matter comprehensively and involve all relevant parties.
