Amnesty International Demands Probe into Delhi Riots

Amnesty International (AI) India, an integral branch of the global human rights movement led by Amnesty International, has recently voiced its demands for an independent investigation into all allegations of human rights’ violations carried out by the police during the north-east Delhi riots.

Understanding the Genesis of the Delhi Riots

On 23rd February 2020, severe riots flared up in Northeast Delhi, fueled by tensions between Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 protestors and those supporting the CAA. The clashes escalated quickly from a political difference to a communal conflict, ensuing death, injuries, and significant property damage. This is not the first time AI has publicly stated its concerns on critical issues; it has previously aired views on the issues in Jammu and Kashmir and the role of Foreigners Tribunals in Assam.

About Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a non-governmental international organisation, established in London, the United Kingdom, in 1961. Among its core missions is publicising the violations committed by governments and other entities that infringe upon rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). These rights primarily encompass freedom of speech and conscience and the right against torture.

The Nobel Prize for Peace: AI’s Remarkable Recognition

In recognition of its tireless efforts and significant advancements to safeguard these fundamental human rights irrespective of borders, AI was bestowed with the highest accolade, the Nobel Prize for Peace, in 1977.

AI India: A Critical Arm in the Human Rights Movement

AI India serves as a crucial arm of this global human rights movement, strident in its pursuit to uphold human rights across the Indian subcontinent. With its registered office situated in Bangalore, Karnataka, AI India continually works to identify and address instances of human rights violations on regional, national, and international levels.

Despite the simplicity of language, it’s essential to note that the organization’s reach and efficacy are by no means understated. The call for an independent investigation into the highly controversial north-east Delhi riots highlights AI India’s commitment to upholding human rights, ensuring justice, and promoting transparency.

In Pursuit of Justice

The current demand by AI India underscores the organization’s commitment to its foundational purpose: ensuring human rights’ respect. It aims to maintain a stringent check on authorities, spotlighting any misuse of power that could lead to a violation of these rights.

By urging a thorough and independent inquiry into the allegations of human rights breaches during the Delhi riots, AI India serves as a potent reminder of the broader movement’s goal: to fight for justice. It reinforces the idea that any compromise on human rights isn’t just an act against an individual or a community, but an affront to humanity at large.

Therefore, despite the situation’s complexity, it’s vital to recognize AI’s role in steering the course towards justice and respect for human rights. As it pursues its mission, AI India continues to emphasize the importance of truth, justice, and accountability, pillars upon which modern societies thrive.
