Ancient Civilization Discovered in Mizoram’s Vangchhia Village

Recently, The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) made a fascinating discovery in Vangchhia, a village located in Mizoram’s Champhai district which borders Myanmar. This discovery has since been named as the Kawtchhuah Ropui heritage site. Interestingly, Kawtchhuah Ropui translates to ‘The Great Entranceway’ and is the first site of its kind in Mizoram, making it particularly significant. The ASI has included it under the protected monuments category owing to its archaeological importance.

The Landscape of Kawtchhuah Ropui

The geographically diverse area that is home to the Kawtchhuah Ropui heritage site is part of the Lower Himalayas. It features rows upon rows of steep hills composed largely of various kinds of sandstone ranging in color from light grey to blackish. The sprawling site measures about 45 square kilometers.

Artifacts Discovered at the Site

Undoubtedly, what makes Kawtchhuah Ropui so intriguing are the myriad artifacts found there. Pictographs etched on large stone slabs, menhirs (large standing stones), an expansive necropolis (a large cemetery), and unique water pavilions are among numerous other artifacts discovered at the site.

The Ancient People of Vangchhia

Not only were the ancient people of Vangchhia skilled artisans, evidenced by the elaborate carvings discovered, but they also showcased their innovative spirit by carving terraces on rocks for their settlement. The main excavated site consists of 15 such terracies. Furthermore, over 100 menhirs, some rising almost 15 feet tall, stand at the excavation site depicting floral, animal, and human figures.

The Water Pavilion System

An intriguing part of the discovery is the water pavilion system. Through strategically drilled holes – varying between one foot and one meter across – spread over several sandstone slopes, these ancients stored water. This innovative technique further adds to the uniqueness of the Vangchhia settlement.
