Annual Bird Census Begins in Andhra Pradesh Sanctuary

The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary along with the neighbouring wetlands in Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari mangroves are currently the focus of the ongoing annual bird census. The central purpose of this census is to compile data on both migratory and resident birds to facilitate a more comprehensive management plan for this intricate ecosystem that hosts a variety of waterbird species. A highlight of the Godavari mangroves is that it stands as one of the very few sites across the globe where the Indian Skimmer bird can be spotted frequently.

The Indian Skimmer Bird

The Indian Skimmer, scientifically known as Rynchops albicollis, is a member of the waterbird species, which are birds that live in or around water bodies. In India, this particular species has specific sighting hotspots such as the vicinity of the Chambal river which is located in Central India, certain regions in Odisha, and finally, in Andhra Pradesh.

Status of the Indian Skimmer

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the Indian Skimmer as vulnerable. This categorization signifies that this species is at a high risk of endangerment in the wild. Despite this alarming status, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has yet to officially list the Indian Skimmer.

Importance of the Bird Census in the Godavari Mangroves

The annual bird census in Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari mangroves is an essential tool for wildlife conservation. It contributes valuable information about various bird species’ population sizes, migratory patterns, and habitats. This data assists in making informed decisions for effective management and protection of these diverse species and their habitats. Furthermore, the census has a key role to play in building strategies for the conservation of vulnerable species such as the Indian Skimmer. This comprehensive approach promises to result in a more robust and resilient ecosystem that can support the incredible biodiversity found within it.
