APSARA U Reactor, “Apsara-Upgraded,” a swimming pool type research reactor, commenced operations at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC), Trombay on September 10, 2018. This reactor significantly enhances indigenous production of radioisotopes for medical application. It also serves as a pivotal point for research in nuclear physics, material science, and radiation shielding.
The Significance of APSARA U Reactor
The APSARA U Reactor utilizes plate type dispersion fuel elements composed of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU). It transforms the landscape of indigenous production of radioisotopes for medical applications by enhancing their availability. Furthermore, it provides an ideal environment for conducting research in multiple domains such as nuclear physics, material science, and radiation shielding.
Historical Significance of Apsara Reactor
The legacy of APSARA U Reactor can be traced back to the first research reactor in Asia named “Apsara”. Operational since August 1956 in the Trombay campus of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, it shut down in 2009 after five decades of service. However, it was recommissioned and upgraded and now operates as APSARA U.
Features of a Swimming Pool-Type Reactor
The swimming pool-type reactor is a popular form of water-cooled, plate-fuel reactor with its core located near the bottom of a large, deep pool of water. This configuration provides efficient cooling and allows easy visual inspection and maintenance.
India’s First Missile Tracking Ship
Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has constructed India’s first Missile Tracking Ship. This vessel will be operated by the National Technical Research Organisation under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s office and the National Security Adviser. It will be inducted into the Indian Navy following sea trial completion, making India one of the few countries to have such a ship.
About Missile Tracking Ships
A missile tracking ship is equipped with antennas and electronics designed for supporting the launch and surveillance of missiles and rockets. Currently named VC 11184, this vessel after induction will join the ranks of other countries like Russia, US, China, and France that own similar ships.
Yudh Abhyas 2018: Joint Military Training Exercise
Yudh Abhyas 2018 marked a significant collaboration between the Indian Army and US Army. Conducted annually, alternating between both countries, Yudh Abhyas 2018 took place in the foothills of the Himalayas at Chaubatia in Uttarakhand. This was the 14th edition focused on counterinsurgency and counterterrorism strategies in mountainous terrain.
Setting Up of International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI)
A joint venture by NITI Aayog, Intel, and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) to set up the International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI) in Bengaluru promises a new horizon in the field of AI-led application-based research projects. The Model ICTAI is committed to developing AI foundational frameworks, tools, and assets including curated datasets and unique AI algorithms.
Application Areas of Model ICTAI
The Model ICTAI, situated in Bengaluru, plans to incubate AI-led solutions in three vital sectors – healthcare, agriculture, and smart mobility. This venture marks a milestone, combining the expertise of Intel (private sector) and TIFR (public sector). The objective is to establish standards and provide policy support connected to IT aspects like data storage, information security, privacy, and data capture ethics.
