Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference

The 14th Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC-14) is set to take place from December 4-6, 2024, in New Delhi. Organised by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this event will focus on the application of satellite data in meteorology and climatology. The conference aims to enhance collaboration among meteorologists, satellite operators, and researchers from various nations.

Purpose of AOMSUC-14

The conference seeks to promote the importance of satellite observations. It aims to advance satellite remote sensing science. A platform will be provided for dialogue between satellite operators and users. The conference will also inform participants about the current status of international space programs. New technologies for weather satellite sensing will be encouraged. Engaging young scientists in this field is a key goal.

Participants and Dignitaries

Approximately 150 participants are expected from various countries. Notable attendees include Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Earth Sciences and other ministries. He will inaugurate the conference at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Other dignitaries include Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Sh. Nilesh M. Desai, Director of the Space Application Centre (ISRO).

Training Workshop

Before the conference, a two-day international training workshop will be held on December 2-3, 2024, at IMD. This workshop will host around 70 trainees from different countries, including India. It aims to enhance skills in utilising satellite data for weather and climate applications.

Historical Context

The first AOMSUC was held in Beijing, China, in 2010. The conference has since become an annual event, rotating locations across the Asia-Oceania region. AOMSUC has established itself as a premier gathering for meteorologists, earth scientists, and students.

Future Coordination

Following AOMSUC-14, an international coordination meeting will take place on December 7, 2024. This meeting will involve members of Regional Association (RA)-II and RA-V countries. It aims to strengthen international cooperation and capacity building in satellite applications for weather and climate forecasting.
