Atapaka Sanctuary: Safe Ground for Threatened Bird Species

The Atapaka Bird Sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Kolleru Lake, has come to light as a safe breeding sanctuary for two migratory species – the Grey Pelicans and Painted Storks. Although the current water level in Kolleru Lake is inviting a slight challenge for these birds to easily capture their prey in the notably deeper waters, it does not deter from the fact that this sanctuary has emerged as an integral breeding ground for these near-threatened species.

The Significance of Atapaka Bird Sanctuary

Under the watchful eye of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, both Grey Pelican and Painted Stork fall under the category of ‘near threatened’. This makes the role of Atapaka Bird Sanctuary all the more crucial. Providing these migratory birds with a safe space where they can breed and thrive has become a vital need for their conservation.

The Kolleru Lake: Mother Nature’s Own Reservoir

Kolleru Lake holds its ground between the deltas of two mighty rivers in Andhra Pradesh – Krishna and Godavari. It stands to serve as a natural flood-balancing reservoir for these rivers. Yet, it is the diverse birdlife it supports that significantly adds to the lake’s importance. Serving as a habitat for an estimated 20 million resident and migratory birds, it is an indispensable part of the local ecosystem.

Species Diversity at Kolleru Lake

Of the various avian species that call Kolleru Lake home, Grey or Spot-billed pelicans hold a special place. These particular birds, along with numerous others, have made Kolleru Lake and the encompassing Atapaka Sanctuary, their home and breeding grounds.

A Sanctuary of International Importance

The Kolleru lake was officially recognized as a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1999, under India’s Wild Life Protection Act of 1972. This recognition was further solidified in 2002 when the lake was declared a wetland of international significance under the Ramsar convention.

Challenges Facing the Sanctuary and its Inhabitants

Even with the sanctuary’s strategic location and the protective measures put in place, challenges persist for the migratory species. The current water level in Kolleru Lake, which includes Atapaka Sanctuary, is posing troubles for the birds to hunt their prey in the deep waters. This predicament coupled with other environmental and human-induced threats significantly affect the well-being of these bird species. As such, continued efforts are required to ensure the sanctuary continues to serve its purpose of being a safe haven for these near threatened species.
