AUSTRAHIND Military Exercise Begins in Pune

The third edition of Exercise AUSTRAHIND has commenced in Pune, Maharashtra. This joint military exercise between India and Australia runs from 8th to 21st November 2024. It aims to strengthen military cooperation and enhance interoperability in sub-conventional operations.

Background of Exercise AUSTRAHIND

Exercise AUSTRAHIND is an annual event that alternates between India and Australia. The previous exercise took place in Australia in December 2023. This year, the Indian contingent comprises 140 personnel from the DOGRA Regiment and the Indian Air Force. The Australian Army is represented by 120 personnel from the 13th Light Horse Regiment.

Objectives of the Exercise

The primary aim is to promote military cooperation. It focuses on joint planning and execution of operations in a semi-urban environment. The exercise adheres to Chapter VII of the UN mandate, involving peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations.

Structure of the Exercise

Exercise AUSTRAHIND is divided into two main phases. The first phase involves combat conditioning and tactical training. The second phase is the validation phase, where specific drills will be executed.

Key Drills and Operations

Participants will rehearse various operations. These include responding to terrorist actions, establishing a Joint Operations Centre, and conducting counter-terrorism raids. They will also practice securing a helipad and employing drones, including counter-drone measures. Special Heli Borne Operations will also be part of the training.

Benefits of the Exercise

The exercise encourages camaraderie between Indian and Australian soldiers. It allows both nations to share best practices in military tactics and procedures. This interaction enhances the readiness and effectiveness of the forces involved.
