Autonomous Navigation Hub Inaugurated in IIT-Hyderabad

The Ministry of Science & Technology recently inaugurated the “Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation” (TiHAN) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad. This facility represents a significant step forward in India’s efforts to develop autonomous navigation technologies, aligning with the country’s vision for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, ‘Skill India’, and ‘Digital India’.

About TiHAN

TiHAN is a multidisciplinary initiative that aims to position India as a global contender in the field of next-generation “Smart Mobility” technology. The project brings together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines, including electrical, computer science, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and mathematics.

Currently, India does not have any such testbed facilities to evaluate the autonomous navigation capabilities of vehicles. TiHAN aims to fill this gap by building a fully functional, exemplary testbed facility dedicated exclusively to testing Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).

CAVs use technology to communicate with each other, traffic signals, signs, and other road infrastructure or receive data from a cloud. This exchange of information enhances safety and improves traffic flow.

Significance of TiHAN

TiHAN serves as a unique platform where academia, industry, and R&D labs can collaborate on high-quality research at both national and international levels. Through this effort, India seeks to become a global leader in autonomous navigation technologies.

India’s mobility sector ranks among the world’s largest markets, and TiHAN-IITH is expected to generate the cutting-edge technology that will drive the future of autonomous vehicles.

TiHAN-IITH: A Testbed for Autonomous Navigations

The TiHAN-IITH facility will serve as a testing ground for next-generation autonomous navigation technologies. By facilitating accurate testing, it will enable more rapid development of these technologies. Furthermore, this testbed will expedite the global market penetration of autonomous navigation technologies developed in India.

In conclusion, the establishment of the TiHAN-IITH testbed facility represents a significant milestone in India’s drive towards becoming a global leader in autonomous navigation technologies. It underscores the country’s commitment to promoting innovation and technological advancement in line with its broader vision for self-reliance, skill development, and digitalization.
