BCCI Urged to Include Kadaknath Chicken in Players’ Diet

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh has recently made an appeal to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The proposition is to incorporate the Kadaknath chicken into the regular diet of cricket players. This request owes to the considerable health benefits linked with consuming this rare poultry breed native to Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Uniqueness of Kadaknath Chicken

Kadaknath chicken, also known as ‘Kali Masi,’ enjoys a unique status among the different varieties of poultry breeds in India. It hails from the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh and was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the government registry in 2017.

The characteristic black meat of Kadaknath chicken has earned it quite a reputation. The quality, texture, taste, and medicinal properties of the meat are some of the key features that set it apart. Moreover, Kadaknath chicken contains 25-27% protein, a higher percentage than other chicken breeds which typically contain about 18% protein.

Furthermore, this special breed is known for having high iron content along with lower levels of fat and cholesterol content in comparison with other chicken breeds. Contributing to its uniqueness, Kadaknath chickens are mainly reared by tribal communities chiefly residing in the districts of Jhabua and Dhar.

Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Background

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was established following the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit in Paris, back in July 1989. The core objective during its inception was to examine and develop measures that would combat money laundering.

Expansion of FATF Mandate

In October 2001, FATF expanded its mandate, incorporating efforts toward combating terrorist financing along with previously established money laundering measures. Their objectives now include setting standards and promoting effective implementation of legal, regulatory, and operational actions for fighting money laundering, terrorist financing, and threats to international financial system integrity.

FATF has developed a series of recommendations recognized as the international standard for combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Aside from developing guidelines, the FATF keeps a close eye on members’ progress in implementing necessary measures. They review money laundering and terrorist financing techniques and counter-measures, encouraging the adoption and implementation of appropriate measures globally. The decision-making body of the Financial Action Task Force, the Financial Action Task Force Plenary, meets thrice every year.

The current membership of the FATF includes 38 countries, including India, and two regional organizations – the European Commission and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The Astana Declaration – A Renewed Commitment Towards Universal Health

In October 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) orchestrated the Global Conference on Primary Health Care in Astana, Kazakhstan. The conference led to the signing of the Astana Declaration aimed at fulfilling all health needs across the life course through comprehensive preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative services, and palliative care.

All 194 WHO member states, including India, have signed this declaration. The commitment towards ‘Primary Care’ was re-affirmed at the conference and the pledge towards Alma Ata Declaration on Primary Health Care, signed in 1978, was reiterated. The Astana Declaration commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Alma Alta Declaration, which established health as a universal human right and advocated for primary health care to be the backbone of universal health coverage.
