Beetle Species ‘Nelloptodes gretae’ Named after Greta Thunberg

Scientists at the prestigious Natural History Museum in London have made an interesting addition to their insect collection. They have officially christened a minuscule species of beetle as Nelloptodes gretae, in honor of the young Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg. First discovered in Kenya during the 1960s, this beetle later found its way to the Natural History Museum in 1978. Biological nomenclature typically comprises two components- one denotes the genus while the other represents the species. In this case, both the genus, Nelloptodes, and the species name, gretae, are new.

Nelloptodes gretae: unveiling the ‘tiny’ champion of biodiversity

Although minute in stature, the Nelloptodes gretae carries a crucial message about the importance of biodiversity on our planet. This little arthropod lacks eyes and wings and measures less than 1mm in length. It belongs to the Ptiliidae family, known for comprising some of the smallest beetles in the world.

The diminutive size of these beetles does not diminish their significance to our ecosystem. Each creature, regardless of its size, plays a role in maintaining the balance of nature. However, biodiversity loss caused by human activities is leading to the rapid extinction of many undiscovered species around the globe.

A tribute to Greta Thunberg

Naming this tiny beetle after Greta Thunberg has a profound symbolism. It acknowledges the substantial contributions made by the teenage campaigner in raising global awareness of environmental degradation. Similar to how Greta speaks for those without a voice, the Nelloptodes gretae represents the silent majority of biodiversity- the small but crucial organisms that often go unnoticed and unnamed.

Species named after famous personalities

This is not the first time organisms have been named after well-known figures. The practice is reasonably common in the scientific community as it often attracts attention to new species and underscores the unique traits or contributions of the individuals they are named after.

Species Named After
Gnathia marleyi Bob Marley
Dawkinsia Richard Dawkins
Spintharus leonardodicaprioi Leonardo DiCaprio

Such as a parasite named Gnathia marleyi after Reggae legend Bob Marley, or a genus of fish titled Dawkinsia in honor of evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Hollywood actor, Leonardo DiCaprio has a spider named after him, being called Spintharus leonardodicaprioi. Each of these cases stands testament to the vibrant diversity of life on Earth and the constant discoveries that continue to enrich biological science.

Significance of Nelloptodes gretae

The naming of Nelloptodes gretae is a profound mix of science and symbolism. It not only recognizes the hard work of Greta Thunberg but also shines a light on the importance of every creature, no matter how small, in nature’s grand tapestry. The declaration resonates with the urgent need for environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation in the face of unceasing human-driven destruction.
