A recent development in the healthcare sector has seen Bharat Electronics Ltd. team up with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh to design a remote patient health monitoring system. This innovation has gained significant attention in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Use and Purpose of the Monitoring System
The primary aim of this monitoring system is to reduce the risk of healthcare workers being exposed to the virus when looking after patients in isolation. This system can be installed either in homes or within hospital premises, safeguarding the health of frontline workers.
Features of the Device
This device comes loaded with a range of non-invasive sensors capable of measuring patient’s temperature, pulse rate, saturation levels of oxygen, and respiration rate. Depending on the severity of a patient’s condition, the device displays different color codes—providing quick and visual understanding of the patient’s health status.
Benefits of the Monitoring System
One of the key advantages of using this system is that it could lead to a reduction in the demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and logistics. Furthermore, the system’s data analytics software can generate hot spots to help authorities contain zones experiencing a surge in cases.
How Does the System Function?
To make this system as user-friendly as possible, a mobile app and web browser have been developed. Individuals who present symptoms of infection can register with AIIMS – Rishikesh via these platforms. The complaints registered by the individuals will be assessed by the hospital, which will provide a kit to those necessary for monitoring health parameters regularly. The patient health parameters—along with the patient location—are regularly uploaded to a Centralized Command & Control Centre (CCC) on cloud. The data can be transmitted through the patient’s personal mobile phone or an integral GSM SIM card.
