Bharatiya Poshan Krishi Kosh Launched in Delhi

The Ministry of Women and Child Development recently unveiled a monumental initiative in New Delhi known as the Bharatiya Poshan Krishi Kosh (BPKK). Serving as a vast repository for a multitude of crops from different agro-climatic zones, the BPKK is expected to improve India’s nutritional outcomes significantly. Notably, the country has been sectioned into fifteen distinct agricultural regions to facilitate this project. Factors such as climatic features, rainfall, temperature variations, soil type, and water resources have been considered in these divisions.

The Pioneer Of The Green Revolution Proposes A Five-Point Action Program

During the launch event, the pioneer of the Green Revolution in India, M S Swaminathan, proposed an insightful five-point action program aimed at securing India’s nutritional future. He emphasised the urgency of ensuring a calorie-rich diet for women, expectant mothers, and children to combat malnutrition.

The Importance Of Protein Intake And Micronutrients

In addition to providing a proper calorie intake, the program establishes the importance of consuming proteins, particularly via pulses, to alleviate protein hunger among women and children. It also focuses on eradicating the prevalent issue of hidden hunger caused by micronutrient deficiencies. Vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin B, along with Iron and Zinc, are essential for a healthy life and must not be overlooked.

Ensuring Clean Drinking Water Supply

Clean drinking water is another focal point of the program, as it is crucial in maintaining good health and nutrition. With this action point, Swaminathan emphasises the direct link between sanitary drinking water and the overall health of the population.

Spreading Nutrition Literacy

The final point in the action program highlights the necessity of spreading nutrition literacy in every village, especially among mothers with newborn babies. Raising awareness about the importance of proper nutrition can significantly improve health outcomes.

SDG Meaning
SDG 2 Zero Hunger
SDG 3 Good Health and Well Being
SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation

Aligning With The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The five-point action program closely aligns with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For instance, it resonates with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well Being), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). In this way, the action program not only addresses nutritional needs but also contributes to broader sustainability goals.

Governments Initiative To Combat Malnutrition

The Indian Government has launched various programmes such as POSHAN Abhiyaan and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) to address malnutrition. These initiatives underline the concerted efforts made by the government to ensure the country’s nutritional security.
