The Government of Bihar has recently entered into a collaboration with the Department of Posts to deliver ‘Shahi Lichi’ and ‘Zardalu Mango’ directly to residents at their doorsteps. This initiative was taken to meet the demand of the consumers and to provide a direct market platform for farmers to vend their fruits without the involvement of middlemen.
An Overview of Shahi Lichi
Shahi Lichi is a unique variety of lichi cultivated mainly in the area of Muzaffarpur. It enjoys popularity among fruit connoisseurs due to its high pulp content and juicier nature, compared to litchis produced in other regions of India.
The ideal growing conditions for this fruit are humid weather and alluvial soil containing a substantial amount of calcium. These conditions are met in regions such as Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and certain adjoining locations, which makes Bihar the hub for lichi cultivation in the country.
In terms of global production, India sits behind China as the second-largest producer of lichi. Within India, Bihar leads in the production of this delicious fruit which is majorly organic.
In recognition of its distinct flavor and attributes, Shahi Lichi received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2018, setting it apart from other variants of lichi.
Recently, there has been a concern surrounding the consumption of Lichi, as it is often associated with the outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar. Experts, however, opine that the fruit may act as a triggering factor only for malnourished children. The toxin known as methylenecyclopropyl glycine (MCPG), present in Lichi, can contribute to hypoglycemia or a drop in sugar levels. This could potentially lead to unconsciousness, coma and, in severe cases, death in children who are undernourished.
Introduction to Zardalu Mango
The Zardalu Mango is a one-of-a-kind variety prominent in Bhagalpur. Known for its light yellow skin and distinctive aroma, this mango has carved out a niche in the world of fruits.
Like its counterpart Shahi Lichi, Zardalu Mango also holds the Geographical Indication (GI) tag since 2018. This recognition gives the fruit an elite status, recognizing its unique taste and origin.
Through initiatives like these, the Government of Bihar is striving not only to meet the demand of the consumers but also to provide farmers with direct access to customers, thereby eliminating the need for middlemen. Bringing the delights of Shahi Lichi and Zardalu Mango directly to people’s doorsteps is a testament to these efforts.
