Bird Survey Dharoi 2023

Bird Survey Dharoi 2023

Birdwatchers from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh recently participated in the two-day Bird Survey Dharoi 2023 in a wetland spanning 107 square kilometres. The survey aimed to map and record the diversity and population of waterfowls in the area. Organized by Adams Nature Retreat Resort and BCSG in collaboration with the Gujarat forest department, the initiative is a follow-up to the first Dharoi Bird Survey in 2022. The previous survey identified 193 bird species out of 616 found in Gujarat and recorded the diversity of waterfowl population in Dharoi.

Understanding the Importance of Wetlands

Wetlands are vital habitats that support a diverse range of flora and fauna, including migratory birds. They provide many ecosystem services, such as water purification, flood control, and carbon sequestration. Wetlands are also essential for human wellbeing, providing resources for fishing, agriculture, and tourism. However, wetlands are rapidly disappearing due to human activities such as drainage, conversion to agriculture, and infrastructure development. As a result, many bird species are losing their habitats and are facing population declines. Therefore, initiatives such as Bird Survey Dharoi 2023 are crucial in understanding and conserving these habitats and their inhabitants.

Recording Waterfowl Diversity

Waterfowls, also known as waterbirds, are a group of birds that inhabit wetland ecosystems. They include ducks, geese, swans, herons, cranes, and storks. These birds are important indicators of wetland health and biodiversity.
The survey recorded the presence of several waterfowl species, including the common teal, northern pintail, gadwall, common pochard, and common coot. The teams also recorded the presence of other bird species such as the greater spotted eagle, osprey, and Indian skimmer. The information collected during the survey will be used to understand the distribution and population trends of waterfowls in the Dharoi wetland. This data is crucial for conservation efforts, as it helps identify areas that are important for migratory birds and informs management plans for wetland habitats.

Conservation Efforts for Wetlands

Conservation efforts for wetlands include habitat restoration, protection, and management. These efforts involve reducing human impacts on wetlands and restoring degraded habitats. Wetland restoration can also provide opportunities for ecotourism, which can support the local economy while promoting conservation.

The Gujarat forest department has been taking several initiatives to conserve wetland habitats in the state. The department has identified several wetlands as important bird areas (IBAs) and has been implementing management plans to conserve them. The department has also been promoting ecotourism in these wetlands to raise awareness about their conservation.
