Bodoland University Develops Covid-19 Immunity-Boosting Fungal Powder

In the midst of a global health crisis, Bodoland University (BU) in Assam, India, has risen to the challenge by developing a unique fungal powder set to boost the immunity of individuals fighting against Covid-19. The innovation comes at a crucial time when efforts are being made worldwide to combat the deadly pandemic.

Cordyceps militaris: A “Super Mushroom”

The fungal powder developed by BU is derived from a rare but parasitic “super mushroom” known as Cordyceps militaris. Regarded as a potent agent for enhancing immunity, this species of mushroom is not commonly found. There are over 400 species of Cordyceps, and C. militaris is among one of them.

The Process of Lyophilisation

To convert the super mushroom into a usable form, the method of lyophilisation was applied. This involves freeze-drying the mushroom at an extremely low temperature of -80°C. The result of this procedure was an effective concentration of C. militaris. This dehydration technique leverages low temperatures and reduced ambient pressure to safely and efficiently dry out the fungal material.

Health Benefits of Cordyceps militaris

Often touted as a super mushroom, Cordyceps militaris possesses a range of health benefits. It is noted for its anti-ageing and anti-viral properties, making it a powerful tool in combating health ailments. Also, it can provide a much-needed boost to energy levels and immunity, supporting individuals’ overall wellbeing, particularly during challenging times such as these.

Additional Innovations from Bodoland University

Aside from producing the beneficial fungal powder, the research team at BU has also created additional products aimed at aiding in the fight against COVID-19. One of these innovations includes a membrane mask that significantly reduces costs with its price of less than Rs. 4 per unit.

In response to the increased demand for sanitation products, the team has also created herbal and alcohol-based sanitisers. To take it a step further, they have designed a sanitisation tunnel assisted by laser and LED technology, demonstrating an innovative approach to mass sanitation.

Furthermore, a low-cost physical-cum-chemical sanitisation box has been developed, allowing for more accessible sanitation methods. For personal safety, BU has also designed a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit complete with an aquarium aerator, ensuring maximum protection and safety during these uncertain times.
