Bogibeel IWT Terminal in Assam

The laying of the foundation stone for the Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Assam marks a significant step towards rejuvenating inland waterways transportation in the region. The terminal, strategically located on the bank of the River Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2), is poised to become a crucial tourist-cum-cargo facility. With an estimated cost of ?46.60 crores and scheduled for completion by February 2024, the terminal is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting trade, commerce, and tourism in the area.

Boosting Inland Waterways Transport

The Bogibeel IWT terminal is set to become a major player in reviving inland waterways transportation along the River Brahmaputra. As an initiative under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which operates as the nodal agency for inland waterways of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), the terminal’s development is a step towards harnessing the potential of India’s vast network of rivers for cargo and passenger transportation.

Modern Amenities for Efficient Operations

Under the aegis of IWAI, the IWT terminal will be equipped with modern amenities to facilitate efficient operations. These amenities include cargo and passenger berths, internal roads, transit shed, open storage area, truck parking, and passenger waiting facilities. Such infrastructure will not only enable smoother cargo and passenger transportation but also boost eco-tourism and reduce transportation costs for EXIM cargo.

Spurring Economic Growth

The development of the Bogibeel IWT terminal is expected to have far-reaching economic impacts on the region. By attracting new industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and cement, the terminal will create employment opportunities and spur industrial growth. Additionally, it will bolster existing trades like tea, polymer, coal, and fertilizers, further contributing to the economic prosperity of the area.

Tourism Potential and Connectivity

The Bogibeel IWT terminal’s strategic location enhances its potential as a growth driver for the tourism sector. The terminal’s presence will not only attract tourists directly but also benefit major destinations in the vicinity, such as Sibsagar, Majuli, Itanagar, Ziro Valley, Pasighat, Roing, and Tawang Valley. Improved connectivity and infrastructure are likely to make these destinations more accessible, leading to increased tourist footfalls and economic gains for the entire region.

Socio-Economic Development Impact

The Bogibeel IWT terminal’s construction is expected to have a transformative effect on the overall socio-economic development of the region. The enhanced connectivity and industrial growth facilitated by the terminal will open up new avenues for economic progress and provide a much-needed boost to various sectors. With improved transportation options, businesses will find it easier to move goods, leading to increased trade and commercial activity.

Benefitting the Northeastern Zone

The impact of the Bogibeel IWT terminal goes beyond the borders of Assam. As a strategically located terminal, it will serve as a crucial link for the entire North Eastern zone, fostering economic integration and growth. Industries in the region will benefit from the efficient movement of goods, and connectivity with other parts of India will be improved. The terminal’s presence will undoubtedly contribute to the socio-economic development of the entire Northeastern region.
