The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), instrumental in connecting and securing India’s border terrains, celebrated its 64th Raising Day on May 7, 2023. The event marked with several inaugurations, launches, and the signing of a significant MoU spanned numerous detachments across the country.
Key Highlights of BRO’s 64th Raising Day
Among the noteworthy happenings of the day was the inauguration of the BRO Technical Training Complex and an Automated Driving Track. With enhanced training standards as the aim, these additions are set to better equip BRO personnel for their diverse duties.
The Digital India initiative saw further progress with the launch of BRO-centric software for the day. Developed to automate various aspects of BRO functioning, this software will ensure smoother, faster output operations and greater transparency.
Boosting India’s defense capabilities, an MoU was signed for the construction of indigenous Class 70R Double Lane Modular Bridges. These pre-engineered steel bridges are designed for two-lane vehicular traffic, enhancing the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.

Understanding the Border Roads Organisation
BRO, a vital entity under the Ministry of Defence’s administrative control, was conceived in 1960 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Instrumental in coordinating the speedy development of road networks in the North and North Eastern regions of India, BRO’s scope of work has expanded to encompass airfields, building projects, defense works, and tunneling.
Over six decades, BRO has made significant strides in infrastructure development. It has constructed over 61,000 km of roads, 900+ bridges, four tunnels, and 19 airfields under challenging conditions along India’s borders and in friendly foreign nations including Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
The year 2022-23 recorded the completion of 103 infrastructure projects by BRO, marking the highest tally in a single year. Key projects include the Shyok Bridge in Eastern Ladakh and Steel Arch Siyom Bridge of Load Class 70 in Arunachal Pradesh on Along-Yinkiong Road.
BRO and Its Role for the Future
As the nation commemorates BRO’s 64th Raising Day, the various inaugurations, software launches, and the signing of the MoU serve as a testament to the organization’s steadfast commitment towards securing and developing India’s border regions. As it continues to diversify and adapt to changing needs, BRO indeed stands to play an integral role in shaping India’s defense infrastructure for the future.
