Celebrating ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Kashmir – 76 Years of Freedom

The Indian Army celebrated ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Srinagar, marking the 76th anniversary of the landing of Indian forces in Kashmir. This historic event ensured the first civil-military victory of Independent India.

Commemorating the Historic Day

On this occasion, the Indian Army remembered the landing of troops at Budgam Airport to evict Pakistani forces from Jammu and Kashmir. This event followed the signing of the Instrument of Accession between Maharaja Hari Singh and the Republic of India.

Reenactment of History

During ‘Shaurya Diwas,’ a reenactment of the historic event took place. The audience, including senior Army and Air Force officers and students, witnessed this tribute to the brave soldiers and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Recalling the Brave Action

The event highlighted the violation of the ‘Standstill Agreement’ by Pakistan and the arrival of Indian Army soldiers on October 27, 1947, to repel the Pakistani Forces.

Honoring the Heroes

Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, the general officer commanding (GoC) of the army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps, emphasized the significance of ‘Shaurya Diwas.’ He acknowledged the Indian Army’s courage during its first significant operation in independent India, thwarting the enemy’s plans and safeguarding Kashmir from Pakistani occupation.

Remembering the Sacrifices

Lt Gen Ghai paid tribute to Major Somnath Sharma, the first Param Vir Chakra recipient, who, despite being injured, led a company and saved the Srinagar airfield from Pakistani tribals. He also remembered the bravery of Brigadier Rajinder Singh and Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai, gallantry award winners who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation.

A Pledge for Peace and Prosperity

Lt Gen Ghai called upon everyone to work tirelessly for the peace and prosperity of Kashmir, ensuring it remains an integral part of India.

Wreath-Laying Ceremony

The Chinar Corps Commander and other dignitaries laid wreaths at the Budgam War Memorial as a mark of respect.

Display of Infantry Weapons and Equipment

A display of modern infantry weapons and equipment was organized under the Victor Force’s auspices. Spectators were briefed about the utility of this equipment in various operations.

Interaction with Veterans

Following the ceremony, the Chinar Corps Commander interacted with veterans, inquiring about their well-being.

Homage Across the Nation

Similar functions were held in Baramulla district as the nation paid homage to the soldiers whose landing in Srinagar marked a turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and independent India.
