Centre launches Technological Advancements in Crop Insurance

In a momentous launch ceremony held in New Delhi, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) introduced a series of groundbreaking technological initiatives aimed at empowering farmers and revolutionizing the agricultural sector. These initiatives include the YES-TECH Manual, WINDS Portal, and the AIDE/Sahayak door-to-door enrollment app. Through the implementation of these advancements, the government strives to streamline operations, improve risk assessment, and provide timely support to farmers, thereby safeguarding their livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

YES-TECH Manual: Enhancing Yield Estimation at the Gram Panchayat Level

The YES-TECH Manual is a comprehensive guide developed after extensive testing and piloting in 100 districts of India. It supports the implementation of YES-TECH, a technology-driven yield estimation system. By offering methodologies, best practices, and integration insights, the manual enables accurate yield assessment at the gram Panchayat level. This empowers farmers with crucial information for informed decision-making and better crop management practices.

WINDS Portal: Centralized Weather Data Management

The WINDS Portal is a centralized platform that hosts, manages, and processes hyper-local weather data collected by Automatic Weather Stations and Rain Gauges at Taluk/Block and Gram Panchayat levels. By providing access to reliable weather information, the portal enhances risk assessment and decision-making in crop insurance, agriculture advisories, and disaster mitigation. It also supports the agricultural sector and rural economy by enabling farmers to make informed choices based on real-time weather data.

AIDE Apps: Door-to-Door Enrollment for Seamless Crop Insurance

The AIDE app’s introduction on the Android platform is a revolutionary step towards simplifying the enrollment process for crop insurance. By bringing the enrollment process directly to the doorstep of farmers, it ensures a seamless and transparent process, making crop insurance more accessible and convenient. This move eliminates barriers and encourages more farmers to participate in the scheme, enhancing overall agricultural resilience.

Empowering Farmers and Streamlining Operations

The technological initiatives under PMFBY aim to empower farmers and streamline the overall insurance and assessment operations, making them more efficient and farmer-friendly.

Accessibility of Weather Information

Efforts have been made to make weather information accessible to every village through technologies like rain watch towers and weather stations at the development block level. This enables farmers to stay informed about weather conditions and plan their agricultural activities accordingly.

Safeguarding Livelihoods

With the introduction of new technological interventions, ongoing enrollment, and delinking of subsidies, the Ministry has taken substantial steps towards safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring timely claim payments without waiting for State actions.

Accurate Loss Assessment and Improved Weather Data Management

The launch of YES-TECH manual and WINDS portal enables accurate loss assessment and improved weather data management, further strengthening the agricultural insurance system.

Substantial Cost-Saving and Farmer-Friendly Policies

One of the most significant accomplishments of the PMFBY is the substantial cost-saving of 11,000 crores, reflecting the effectiveness of the new initiatives. Additionally, the reduction in premiums from 17%-18% to 8-9% showcases the government’s dedication to ensuring farmer-friendly policies.

Government’s Commitment to Farmer Welfare

The PMFBY’s launch event stands as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to farmer welfare and agricultural growth. The strides taken in technological interventions, cost-saving measures, and enhanced accessibility reaffirm the scheme’s goal of safeguarding farmers’ interests and building a resilient agricultural sector in India.
