Climate Change Fuels Decline of Kelp Forests, Study Finds

The recent findings of a study have thrown light on the alarming environmental consequences of climate change. The study focussed on the impact of global warming on Kelp forests – specifically, it highlighted that Ecklonia radiata, a significant species of kelp in the southern hemisphere, is under severe threat. Kelp forests are undersea ecosystems formed by the dense growth of various species of large brown algae. These enormous plant-like organisms are typically found in cool, shallow waters close to the shore. They fasten to the seafloor, eventually growing towards the water surface and rely primarily on sunlight for food and energy production. Kelp forests require clear water as they are always coastal.

These forests are more than just an accumulation of kelp; they provide habitats to hundreds of invertebrate species, fish, and other algae. This characteristic endows them with immense ecological and economic value.

Kelp forests act as the primary food source for various marine creatures and significantly contribute to the coastal carbon cycle. Kelp itself is responsible for generating up to 60% of the carbon found in coastal invertebrates, thus boosting coastal productivity.

Beyond marine life, these forests also play an essential role on land, serving as a hub for birds to forage. Additionally, their primary production process yields new biomass, detritus, and other materials that further benefit the environment.

World Distribution of Major Kelp Forests

The distribution of kelp forests is global, but they are especially dominant in specific regions. According to sources by DTE, major kelp forests are concentrated in parts of North America, South America, Africa, Australia, and some parts of Asia.

As climate change continues to disrupt ecosystems and threaten biodiversity, the survival of kelp forests becomes precarious. Given their importance, preserving these forests is integral to several marine species’ survival and overall coastal ecosystem productivity. By understanding the problems they face and implementing measures to mitigate them, we can help ensure their continued existence and, as a result, preserve our planet’s ecological balance.
