Climate Change Threatens Aardvarks in Sub-Saharan Africa

As the recent research conducted by Oregon State University showcases, the aardvarks (Orycteropus afer) in sub-Saharan Africa are facing serious vulnerabilities due to the effects of climate change. The study has brought to light some worrisome trends that indicate a growing isolation of aardvarks due to increasingly arid landscapes, making them prone to the rapid warming of the climate.

Climate Change and Aardvarks

Climate change has a significant role in threatening the existence of aardvarks. As global warming intensifies, it leads to an increased dryness in the region’s landscape, isolating these creatures. The vulnerability of aardvarks is primarily due to their exposure to aridification – a gradual process through which a region becomes progressively drier. This phenomenon directly affects their distribution and movement.

Impact of Long-Term Droughts

Growing climate changes have made long-term droughts, particularly in the Horn of Africa, more probable. These prolonged periods of draught are another factor that significantly impacts the habitat and lifestyle of aardvarks.

About Aardvarks

Aardvarks are nocturnal mammals endemic to Africa, and they belong to the Tubulidentata order. It is noteworthy that this mammal is the only surviving species within this taxonomic group. You can primarily find these burrowing mammals across the southern two-thirds of Africa, especially in savannah and semi-arid regions.

Aardvarks: Guardians of the Ecosystem

For the ecosystem, aardvarks hold great importance as they feed on termites that can cause extensive damage to structures built by humans. Moreover, the burrows that they construct serve as essential habitats for many other species. This crucial role played by aardvarks in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem makes their looming vulnerability a grave concern.

Conservation Status of Aardvarks

The IUCN has listed the aardvark under the ‘Least Concern’ category in its Red List of Threatened Species. However, this should not lead to complacency in the efforts to protect this species, considering the threats posed by climate change.

The Global Climate Crisis and Efforts Toward Net Zero

The global climate crisis is undoubtedly intensifying, making it crucial for all nations to take decisive action towards achieving net zero carbon emissions. The plight of the aardvarks serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impacts of climate change on various species and the urgency to take appropriate measures to address these issues.
