Coradion calendula

Coradion calendula

Coradion calendula is a new species of butterflyfish discovered in Australian waters. The butterflyfish belongs to the genus Coradion, which is known for its striking coloration and eye-catching patterns. The Coradion calendula was first identified in 2018, but the announcement of the discovery was made only recently. The butterflyfish was found during a research expedition in the Ningaloo Canyons, which is situated off the coast of Western Australia. The discovery of this new species highlights the remarkable biodiversity of the Australian marine environment.

Characteristics of Coradion calendula

The Coradion calendula has a unique pattern and coloration that makes it stand out from other species of the genus Coradion. It has a yellowish-orange body with a distinct black band that runs diagonally across its head, continuing onto its dorsal fin. It has another black band that runs across its eyes, and its pectoral and caudal fins are yellow with black stripes. It has a thin body that is compressed laterally, which is typical of the butterflyfish family. The butterflyfish can grow up to 18 cm in length.

Habitat and distribution

The Coradion calendula’s habitat spans from the North West Shelf east to the northern Cape York Peninsula, close to the Torres Strait. It is found in both shallow and deep waters, ranging from 6 meters to 130 meters. The butterflyfish is usually found in areas with high coral cover and is likely to feed on sponge tissue and benthic invertebrates.

Conservation status

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not yet assessed the conservation status of Coradion calendula. The discovery of a new species of butterflyfish is significant as it highlights the need for further research into the biodiversity of Australian waters. The Australian government has designated the Ningaloo Canyons as a marine park to protect the area’s unique marine life. The discovery of the Coradion calendula highlights the importance of preserving such protected areas for the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Genus Coradion

The genus Coradion is known for its eye-catching coloration and patterns, and its members are a popular choice for aquariums. There are currently four recognized species of Coradion, including the newly discovered Coradion calendula. The other species are Coradion chrysozonus, Coradion altivelis, and Coradion melanopus. These species are native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans and are found in coral reefs and rocky areas.

The butterflyfish family

Butterflyfishes are a family of marine fishes that are found in tropical waters around the world. They are known for their brightly colored bodies, and many species have striking patterns on their fins and bodies. Butterflyfishes are relatively small, with most species growing to less than 20 cm in length. They feed primarily on invertebrates, such as crustaceans, polychaete worms, and sponges.
