The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, approved three significant proposals on July 13, 2023. These decisions reinforce the Indian Navy’s capabilities and strengthen indigenous defense manufacturing, aligning with India’s vision for self-reliance in defense production. The approved proposals include the procurement of Rafale Marine aircraft, additional Scorpene submarines, and guidelines to promote indigenous content in defense acquisitions.
Procurement of Rafale Marine Aircraft
The DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft from the French Government. This includes associated equipment, weapons, simulators, training, and logistic support for the Indian Navy. The Rafale Marine aircraft is specifically designed for sustained combat operations at sea, equipped with design features that enhance survivability in demanding carrier operations. These aircraft are built to operate from 40,000-tonne class aircraft carriers and will significantly augment the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
Additional Scorpene Submarines under Buy (Indian) Category
The DAC approved the procurement of three additional Scorpene submarines, to be built under the Buy (Indian) category. These submarines will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), further enhancing indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities. The inclusion of higher indigenous content in the construction of these submarines aligns with India’s vision for self-reliance in defense production.
