Defence ministry, FSSAI to promote use of millets

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Health & Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya recently released a book titled ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence’. Developed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the book aims to promote the consumption of millets, also known as Shree Anna, and highlight their numerous health benefits. This collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and FSSAI will raise awareness about the nutritional advantages of diet diversity and millet-based food products among defense personnel and their families.

Creating Awareness about Nutritional Benefits

The primary objective of ‘Healthy Recipes for Defence’ is to create awareness about the nutritional benefits of incorporating millets into one’s diet. Millets are nutrient-rich grains that offer a range of health benefits. By promoting the consumption of millets, the book aims to improve the dietary diversity of defense personnel and their families, thereby enhancing their overall health and well-being. The book serves as a valuable resource, providing a variety of millet-based recipes to encourage individuals to adopt healthier eating habits.

Introduction of Millet-Based Menus

The MoU between the MoD and FSSAI also paves the way for the introduction of millet-based menus in messes, canteens, and other food outlets under the MoD. This initiative will ensure that millets are incorporated into the daily meals of defense personnel, further promoting their consumption. The introduction of millet-based menus not only enhances the nutritional quality of the meals but also contributes to sustainable agriculture and supports local farmers who cultivate millets.

Training on Food Safety and Hygiene

The collaboration between the MoD and FSSAI also emphasizes the training of food handlers and chefs in messes, canteens, and other food outlets. There will be a specific focus on food safety and hygiene practices in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. This training ensures that the food prepared and served to defense personnel adheres to the highest standards of quality, promoting their health and well-being. It also helps in preventing foodborne illnesses and ensures that the defense community receives safe and nutritious meals.

Encouraging Nutritious Diets for Armed Forces and Communities

The MoU between the MoD and FSSAI extends beyond the armed forces and aims to encourage families of defense personnel and communities at large to adopt nutritious diets and make healthy food choices. By promoting millets and providing information about their health benefits, the collaboration seeks to improve the dietary habits of individuals beyond the defense community. This holistic approach contributes to the overall well-being of armed forces families and the larger population, fostering healthier lifestyles and food practices.

Millet: A Nutritional Powerhouse

Millets are considered “powerhouses of nutrition” and have gained recognition for their health benefits. These grains are rich in essential nutrients, including dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are gluten-free and have a low glycemic index, making them suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions and those seeking to manage lifestyle problems such as obesity and diabetes. Moreover, millets have been found to aid in managing diabetes, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and promoting better digestive health. The presence of antioxidants in millets also contributes to anti-aging properties and overall well-being. Recognizing the nutritional significance of millets, the Agriculture Ministry declared them as “Nutri Cereals” in 2018.
