Defence Ministry Procures 100 More K9-Vajra Howitzers

The Ministry of Defence in India has initiated the acquisition procedure for an additional 100 K9-Vajra self-propelled howitzers, intensifying the nation’s defense capacities. The news comes after the successful delivery of the 100th K9-Vajra gun to the Army in 2021.

K9 Vajra: An Overview

The K9 Vajra is a unique weapon demonstrating advanced artillery power. This 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked, self-propelled howitzer has its roots in India, produced specifically by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The gun has been designed for high-trajectory shell firing at low velocities, setting it apart from standard artillery pieces.

K9 Vajra utilizes technology adapted from the South Korean defence giant, Hanwha Defense. The underlying platform is based on the firm’s own K9 Thunder and boasts a full-welded steel armour protection material structure.

The creation of the K9 Vajra was propelled through the ‘Buy Global’ scheme under the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP). As part of this scheme, foreign companies can participate and contribute to the Indian defence industry.

Deployment in Varied Terrain: Desert and Mountain

Originally, the K9 Vajra was primarily procured for deployment in desert terrain. However, the escalating tensions along the India-China border demanded a shift, leading to its placement in the mountainous region as well.

Navigating the tricky landscape and extreme weather conditions of mountains is different from desert warfare. The difference lies not just in the geographical features but also in the climate of these regions

To ensure optimal performance of these systems even in the harsh cold weather conditions of the mountains, the Army procured specialized winterisation kits for the regiment involved.

Boosting India’s Defense Capacity

The additional procurement of K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers showcases India’s focused approach to improve its military infrastructure. Along with enhancing the strength and reach of India’s artillery, it demonstrates the nation’s commitment to securing its borders.

The increased adoption of the K9 Vajra is expected to give the army a much-needed boost in firepower. Given the platform’s success in varying conditions, the acquisition of an additional 100 units will no doubt solidify its position within the Army’s arsenal.

India’s Growing Defence Industry

The K9-Vajra howitzers underline the growing capabilities of India’s defence industry. The successful collaboration between L&T and Hanwha Defense signifies the potential for further international partnerships.

Such initiatives can inject fresh vigor into India’s home-grown defence sector, promoting innovation, expanding capabilities, and paving the path for more advanced military tech solutions in the future.

The production of K9 Vajra also signifies the success of ‘Buy Global’ initiative under the Defence Procurement Procedure, which allows foreign companies to participate in Indian defense contracts. This not only fosters global partnerships but also helps in the transfer of advanced technology,

Overall, the move takes India a step closer towards becoming self-reliant in the defence sector and enhances its stand on the global stage.
