The Ministry of Defence has recently inked a deal worth Rs. 557 crore with BEML Limited, formerly known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited. As per this contract, BEML will deliver 1,512 mine ploughs for T-90 Tanks, with expected completion by the year 2027. This initiative is poised to significantly bolster the capabilities of the Indian Army and further the government’s ‘Make in India’ directive.
Details about T-90 Tanks
The T-90 Tanks are primarily of Russian origin and serve as the main battle tanks within the Indian Army’s arsenal. These advanced combat vehicles have been deployed recently in the Galwan Valley sector of Ladakh during the ongoing face-off with Chinese forces. The induction of more such tanks fortified with advanced equipment is predicted to further boost the army’s effectiveness in protecting national borders.
The Role of Mine Ploughs
A vital component of these tanks are the mine ploughs. These devices greatly assist the tanks in clearing minefields, thereby considerably reducing risks to both men and machinery. Once installed onto the T-90 Tanks, these ploughs will ensure smoother mobility for the tanks while traversing a minefield.
Anticipated Advantages
With the inclusion of these special devices, the tank fleet’s mobility is anticipated to increase multifold. This increased mobility will, in turn, facilitate the armoured formations to penetrate deeper into enemy territory without becoming a casualty to hidden mines.
Fostering ‘Make in India’
This decision reflects the government’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The mentioned contract follows the Buy and Make (Indian) categorisation, which mandates at least 50% indigenous content in the Make segment. By promoting local production, this move will greatly contribute to fortifying national industries.
