Defense Services Ground ALH Fleet; Panel Urges Nuclear Investment

The Indian Defense Services, Coast Guard, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have all had significant events occur recently with the Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) DHRUV. Similarly, changes have been proposed in the nuclear power sector by a government panel. Moreover, the Delhi Tourism Department has launched ‘haunted walks’, selecting Malcha Mahal as the first destination.

Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) DHRUV Grounded

In light of multiple incidents, all three defense services and the Coast Guard decided to ground their respective ALH fleets. This action followed the ditching at sea of a Navy ALH-MkIII on March 8, 2023, and another incident involving a Coast Guard ALH. These helicopters, known as ALH Dhruv, are multi-role, twin-engine, utility helicopters designed and produced by HAL.

The ALH Dhruv comes in several variants including Mk-I MK-II & Mk-III, MK-III Maritime Role (for Navy/ Coast Guard use), and MK-IV Armed version. The Dhruv MkIII variant is equipped with modern surveillance radar and electro-optical equipment, enabling it to perform maritime reconnaissance tasks, along with long-range Search and Rescue operations during day and night. ALH MK III also features a heavy machine gun for constabulary missions.

Foreign Investment in Nuclear Power

A government panel established by the Niti Aayog proposes India should lift its ban on foreign investment in the nuclear power industry. Also, involvement from domestic private companies should be increased. Currently, India does not permit foreign investment in this sector, and state-run entities, Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd. (NPCIL) and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam, are the only two nuclear power generators in the country.

These reforms are expected to allow both domestic and foreign private companies to supplement the nuclear power generation of public firms, thus helping reduce carbon emissions. This approach puts nuclear power in sharp focus due to its ability to provide uninterrupted energy, unlike solar power. With nuclear energy accounting for only 3% of total production in contrast to coal’s 75%, there is significant potential for growth.

Haunted Walks at Malcha Mahal

The Delhi Tourism Department’s ‘haunted walks’ have been initiated, with Malcha Mahal selected as the first stop on this exciting journey. The Malcha Mahal, also known as Wilahat Mahal, is a hunting lodge from the Tughlaq era, constructed by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century. It is located deep within a forest, 1.5 km from the main road in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

Named after Malcha Marg, which is home to the city’s elite, including diplomats, businessmen, and writers, this historic site offers a glimpse into the past. Feroz Shah Tughlaq, the Sultan of Delhi from 1351 to 1388, was known for creating architecturally unconventional buildings. He is also highly regarded for his contributions towards the establishment of India’s irrigation system.
