Delhi Police Launches Anti-Drug Campaign

Delhi is stepping up its fight against drug abuse and trafficking. The Delhi Police has initiated a month-long campaign aimed at eradicating narcotics. This campaign is part of a broader strategy to ensure a drug-free environment in the capital. The initiative comes as New Year celebrations approach, denoting the urgency of addressing drug-related issues.

Current Context

The campaign is rooted in a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics. As of mid-November 2024, the Delhi Police reported arrests and drug seizures. Over 1,500 narco-offenders were arrested in more than 1,100 cases. The quantities of drugs recovered include substantial amounts of heroin, cocaine, ganja, opium, charas, and poppy heads.

Legal Framework

The campaign operates under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS). This law allows for stringent action against drug traffickers. Detention orders have been issued against several offenders. Financial investigations are also underway, with assets amounting to over ₹3 crore being frozen.

Strategic Meetings

The 9th State Level Committee meeting of the National Coordination Committee for Drug Abuse Prevention (NCORD) was held on November 20. This meeting focused on reviewing strategies to combat drug trafficking. The Delhi Lieutenant Governor emphasised the need for inter-departmental cooperation and timely reporting of drug-related activities.

Campaign Activities

The campaign includes targeted surveys and awareness programs across various locations. These include schools, colleges, hostels, and public transport hubs. The aim is to engage the community and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Random checks will be conducted on auto-rickshaws and delivery services to identify potential trafficking activities.

Public Involvement

A key aspect of the campaign is involving the public. The Delhi Police will offer cash rewards for information on drug trafficking. This initiative aims to encourage community participation in combating drug-related issues.

Collaboration with Institutions

The police will collaborate with educational institutions to prevent drug-related incidents. This includes working with hostel wardens and school principals to create a safe environment for students.

Media Engagement

To enhance public awareness, the campaign will utilise various media platforms. This includes print, visual media, social media, and public transport advertisements. Collaborations with celebrities and community leaders are also planned to amplify the message.

Future Goals

The ultimate goal is to achieve a “Drug-Free Delhi” within three years. This ambitious target reflects a commitment to tackling drug abuse comprehensively.
