The Martin Foundation, in collaboration with the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation and Space Zone India, recently launched the APJ Abdul Kalam Satellite Launch Vehicle Mission 2023 from Pattipolam village in Tamil Nadu. This mission was unique in that it was designed and executed entirely by students in grades six through twelve from across India. More than 5,000 students were selected to participate in the project, and they were responsible for designing and building 150 PICO satellites that were launched via rocket.
Virtual Classes and Hands-On Sessions
The selected students were given virtual classes on satellite technology, followed by hands-on sessions to help them explore the project domain and career opportunities in the sector. This initiative aimed to train students in space sciences and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills and creativity. By engaging with students from a young age, this project hoped to inspire the next generation of space scientists and engineers.
Building PICO Satellites
The PICO satellites built by the students were tiny, cube-shaped satellites, each measuring just 5 cm in length and width. These satellites were built using 3D printers and consisted of solar panels, a transmitter, a receiver, and a microcontroller. The satellites were also equipped with temperature sensors and cameras that captured images of the earth from space.
Launching the Satellites
The PICO satellites were launched via a rocket, the APJ Abdul Kalam Satellite Launch Vehicle. This rocket was named after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India and a renowned space scientist. The rocket was designed and built entirely by Indian engineers, and it was the first time that a rocket designed and built by Indian students was used to launch satellites into space.
Training Future Space Scientists
