The World Food Prize Foundation recently unveiled the laureate for the World Food Prize 2022 as Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig from the United States. Celebrated for her critical research on the connection between climate and food systems, Dr. Rosenzweig’s work has provided insights into future changes in these pivotal areas of global concern.

About the World Food Prize

Founded to honor those who have significantly contributed to improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food worldwide, the World Food Prize serves as a key international accolade. This annual award recognizes efforts across various disciplines including plant, animal and soil science, food science and technology, nutrition, rural development, and more.

The World Food Prize offers an open platform, inviting participation from individuals across racial, religious, national, and political lines. The award bestows upon the laureate a cash prize of $250,000 USD along with a special sculpture designed by renowned artist and designer, Saul Bass.

Presentation and Sponsorship

Every October, coinciding with the United Nations’ World Food Day observed on 16th October, the laureate is presented with the prize. The supporting base of the World Food Prize Foundation comprises over 80 companies, individuals and other entities who contribute as donors. The Foundation operates out of Des Moines, USA.

The Brainchild of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, the 1970 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his transformative work in global agriculture, was the visionary behind the creation of the World Food Prize. Widely hailed as the Father of the Green Revolution, Dr. Borlaug’s concept was brought to life in 1986 through the sponsorship of General Foods Corporation. Because of its significance, the World Food Prize is colloquially referred to as the “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture.”

Previous Laureates

Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig continues the lineage of distinguished laureates. In 2021, Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, a leading nutrition expert, claimed the prize. Dr. Rattan Lal, an Indian-American soil scientist, received recognition in 2020. The first recipient, in 1987, was Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, regarded as the father of India’s Green Revolution. These laureates are emblematic of the broad spectrum of disciplines and efforts recognized by the World Food Prize.

This distinguished award, while recognizing the critical efforts of individuals improving global food supply and availability, also serves as a platform to highlight the interconnectedness of agriculture, nutrition, and sustainable development in the context of emerging global challenges. While the laureates represent the best in their fields, they also inspire future generations to push boundaries within and beyond their respective fields.
