Drones Revolutionise Healthcare Logistics in India

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has made strides in healthcare logistics by employing drones for the transportation of sensitive medical materials. On March 25, 2025, a successful feasibility study demonstrated the capability of drones to transport human corneas and amniotic membrane grafts from collection centres to hospitals in Haryana. This initiative, supported by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, showcases the potential of drone technology in enhancing healthcare delivery.

Feasibility Study Overview

The study involved transporting corneal tissue from Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in Sonipat to the National Cancer Institute at AIIMS Jhajjar. The journey, which typically takes two-and-a-half hours by road, was completed in just 40 minutes by drone. This rapid transport maintained optimal conditions for the integrity of the specimens, leading to successful transplant surgery.

i-DRONE Initiative

The i-DRONE initiative by ICMR has been very important in demonstrating the use of drones for medical supply delivery. This includes transporting vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, medications in high-altitude regions, and blood bags in the National Capital Region. The initiative reflects the growing role of drones in addressing healthcare challenges, especially in remote areas.

The Central government views drones as transformative tools in healthcare logistics. They facilitate rapid delivery of life-saving supplies to hard-to-reach locations.
