The Department of Science and Technology (DST) recently organised a webinar entitled ‘Fighting Corona – Leveraging Scientific Research & Innovation’ to mark their 50th foundation day. A range of schemes launched by the DST such as SUPRA, IRHPA, NIDHI, SATHI, and MANAK were discussed during this virtual event.
Overview of the Schemes
SUPRA Scheme
The Scientific and Useful Profound Research Advancement (SUPRA) aims to financially support research endeavours that may bring about pivotal scientific and engineering innovations with international impact.
IRHPA Scheme
The Intensification of Research in High Priority Areas (IRHPA) initiative is managed by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). This scheme backs proposals that focus on developing fundamental aspects of science which are deemed high-priority areas. SERB was founded in 2009 as a statutory body under DST’s administration to foster and finance research across various scientific fields.
NIDHI Scheme
The National Initiative For Developing And Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) is a comprehensive initiative for startups. Its key objective is to increase the count of incubators and startups by twofold within a span of five years.
MANAK Scheme
MANAK or Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and Knowledge has been conceived with the idea to foster innovation in school children. The scheme aims to stimulate 10 lakh school children across the nation to transform their ideas into prototypes yearly. This program is designed to prepare the younger generation for future challenges such as innovation and entrepreneurship, and to help them harness the potential of their innovative ideas.
SATHI Scheme
The Sophisticated Analytical & Technical Help Institutes (SATHI) plan is designed to establish centres that will house equipment necessary for MSMEs and startups to develop rapid prototypes. Each centre is estimated to cost around Rs 125 crore. The scheme aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia.
About the Department of Science and Technology
The Department of Science and Technology was established on the 3rd of May 1971, modelled after the National Science Foundation (NSF) of USA. The department is responsible for distributing funds as well as formulating policies in the field of science and technology. The DST also coordinates scientific collaborations with other countries.
A key focus of DST is to empower scientists and scientific institutions across the country. The department works with a widely distributed system that ranges from school students, college students, PhD scholars, postdoctoral researchers, young scientists, startups, to non-governmental organisations involved in scientific research and technology.
Over the years, the budget allocated to the DST has seen an increase by 100%. This has paved the way for the initiation of new programs covering a broad spectrum of areas.
