DST Selects 21 Scientists for Swarna Jayanti Fellowship

The Department of Science & Technology (DST) in India has recently made headlines for the selection of 21 scientists for its prestigious Swarna Jayanti fellowship. Instigated by the Government of India to mark the 50th year of India’s independence, the fellowship is a program dedicated to supporting and furthering the scientific careers of proven young talents, enabling them to conduct cutting-edge research in various science and technology frontiers.

The Swarna Jayanti Fellowships Scheme

The Swarna Jayanti Fellowships scheme was established as a tribute to India’s independence. This special program provides both financial assistance and professional support to a select group of young scientists who have demonstrated significant capabilities and achievements in their respective fields. The ultimate aim of the scheme is to nurture these talents and equip them with the necessary resources to carry out fundamental research in frontier areas of science and technology.

Awards and Benefits under the Scheme

The selected fellows of the scheme are given an additional monthly fellowship of Rs. 25,000, apart from the salary they receive from their parent institute. Furthermore, the fellowship includes a substantial Research Grant of Rs. 5 lakh per annum, provided by the DST, which lasts for a period of five years.

Additional Grants and Coverage

Apart from the fellowship amount, provisions are made for other requirements to facilitate the scientific journey of the fellows. These include grants for buying essential equipment, setting up computational facilities, purchasing consumables and meeting contingencies. Additional provisions are also made to cover expenses related to national and international travel, as well as any other unique requirements, all based on individual merit.

The Unique Features of the Fellowships

The Swarna Jayanti fellowships stand out due to their selective nature and the level of academic scrutiny involved. They are specific to individual scientists rather than institutions. Selected scientists are given the freedom and flexibility to conduct research without any constraints, as long as it meets the approved research plan.

Criteria and Impact of the Research Projects

The fellowship demands that the proposed projects contain innovative research ideas. The project should have the potential to significantly impact R&D in the chosen scientific discipline. Once selected, the fellow’s projects are considered for funding by the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB).

About the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB)

SERB is a statutory body functioning under the DST. It was established by an Act of the Parliament of India in 2009. SERB plays a pivotal role in providing necessary funding to the projects submitted by the selected fellows, following its standard norms.

The Swarna Jayanti Fellowships represent a significant initiative by the DST to foster scientific discovery and innovation among the best young talents in India. By offering vital support and resources, the scheme helps to accelerate the progression of science and technology in the country.
