Earth Overshoot Day Hits on July 29, 2019

The Earth Overshoot Day is a significant environmental event that marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what the Earth can regenerate within a year. With the most recent Overshoot Day falling on July 29th, 2019, this marks a crucial turning point in our consumption patterns and environmental sustainability.

The Origins of Earth Overshoot Day

The concept of Earth Overshoot Day was first conceptualized by Andrew Simms of the UK-based think tank New Economics Foundation. This institution partnered with the Global Footprint Network in 2006 to launch the inaugural global Earth Overshoot Day campaign. Interestingly, at its inception, Earth Overshoot Day fell in the month of October, significantly later than more recent marks.

Participation of World Conservation Organization

World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), recognized as the world’s largest conservation organization, has been involved in Earth Overshoot Day events since 2007. Its active participation highlights the importance of this event in global conversation around resource conservation and ecological balance.

Calculation of Earth Overshoot Day

The Earth Overshoot Day is computed by the Global Footprint Network. The process involves dividing the planet’s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth can generate that year) by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (humanity’s demand for that year). The result is then multiplied by 365, the number of days in the year. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:
Earth Overshoot Day = (Planet’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365

About the Global Footprint Network

The Global Footprint Network is an international non-profit organization established in 2003. Its primary focus has been to provide robust data about the Ecological Footprint, a metric that critically compares human demand on nature against nature’s capacity to regenerate.

Some Notable Facts

Fact Description
Founding Year of Global Footprint Network 2003

The Ecological Footprint

The Ecological Footprint, a key component in calculating the Earth Overshoot Day, is an insightful metric that measures human demand on nature against nature’s capacity to regenerate. This measurement offers a comprehensive picture of our impact on the environment and the sustainability of our consumption patterns.
