EESL’s Ambitious Initiatives: 1 Crore Efficient Fans and 20 Lakh Cook Stoves Nationwide

EESL’s Ambitious Initiatives: 1 Crore Efficient Fans and 20 Lakh Cook Stoves Nationwide

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Power, is taking a significant step towards bolstering energy efficiency in households by launching two nationwide programs. These initiatives aim to reduce environmental impacts while improving the lives of Indian citizens.

National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP)

Revolutionizing Cooking with Induction Stoves EESL is collaborating with Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) to introduce induction-based cook stoves through the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP). These stoves offer a remarkable 25-30% cost advantage compared to conventional cooking methods. The goal is to distribute 20 lakh induction cook stoves across India, providing a more efficient and cost-effective way to cook.

Energy Efficient Fans Programme (EEFP)

Cooling Homes with Environment-Friendly Fans Following its initiation during the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group in July, the Energy Efficient Fans Programme (EEFP) is set to distribute a whopping 1 crore energy-efficient BLDC fans. These fans are designed to reduce energy consumption and contribute to a greener environment.

Government’s Support

Reducing Dependence on Imported Energy Sources Union Power & NRE Minister R. K. Singh emphasized the advantages of electric cooking in reducing dependence on imported energy sources. He highlighted the economic and strategic reasons for shifting towards electricity-based cooking and addressing the financial challenges faced by some households in buying gas cylinders. Singh emphasized that there is no significant difference between food cooked using electric stoves and gas stoves, underlining the importance of creating awareness about this transition.

Efficient Appliances

The Way Forward Union Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal pointed out the potential market growth in India’s fan industry, which is approximately Rs. 10,500 crores. He emphasized that the NECP will expand access, lower prices, and benefit Indian citizens while replacing inefficient fans with more energy-efficient models.

Greening India’s Electricity In line with India’s energy transition roadmap, the focus is on electrifying the economy and transitioning to greener electricity sources. By 2030, around 65% of India’s capacity is expected to come from non-fossil-fuel sources, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.

EESL’s Commitment

EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor expressed the organization’s commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints in Indian households through the launch of NECP and EEFP. These initiatives are not only beneficial for the environment but also for the well-being of the citizens.

Impact on Residential Electricity Consumption

As of January 1, 2023, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency mandated star labels on ceiling fans. Given that ceiling fans account for nearly 40% of residential electricity consumption, replacing them with more efficient models could potentially reduce almost 20% of the total residential electricity usage.
