FMC India has unveiled ENTAZIA, a bio fungicide developed with Bacillus subtilis, providing farmers a sustainable solution to safeguard their crops from fungal threats while preserving the environment. ENTAZIA taps into Bacillus subtilis’ natural abilities to combat bacterial leaf blight, a severe rice disease. By enhancing the plant’s defense system against pathogens, it prevents and manages bacterial leaf blight without harming beneficial organisms. This biological product enhances plant resilience, promotes a healthy microbiome, and can be integrated into pest management programs alongside FMC’s bio-stimulants and synthetic fungicides.
Facts/Terms for UPSC Prelims
- Bacillus subtilis: Bacillus subtilis is a beneficial bacterium used in agriculture to control plant diseases. It’s known for its ability to inhibit pathogenic fungi and bacteria while promoting plant health.
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Integrated Pest Management is a holistic approach to pest control that combines various strategies, such as biological control, cultural practices, and chemical treatments, to manage pests effectively while minimizing environmental impact.
- Microbiome: The microbiome refers to the community of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) that inhabit a specific environment, like the plant’s roots or leaves. A healthy microbiome can enhance plant growth and resistance to diseases.
- Synthetic Fungicides: Synthetic fungicides are chemical compounds used in agriculture to control fungal diseases. They are designed to kill or inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi but can have environmental and health implications if not used responsibly.
- Leaf Blight: Leaf blight is a plant disease that affects leaves, leading to discoloration, wilting, and potentially death. It’s caused by various fungal or bacterial pathogens and can harm a wide range of plants, including crops and ornamental plants.
