Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022 Inaugurated

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises recently inaugurated the ‘Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022’ in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The aim of this event is to emphasize the importance of coordinated efforts between State and Central Governments in promoting the production of coir and coir products. The event also strives to identify new areas of application for coir.

Understanding Coir: An Eco-friendly Material

Coir is a naturally occurring fibrous material found on coconut husks. It has been used for centuries for several purposes, such as producing ropes and ship cables. With the advancement in technology, it is now used to create an array of products like rugs, doormats, plant pots, and even potting mix products. Moreover, it is an environmentally friendly product that aids in reversing global warming.

Status of Coir Industry in India

In India, the Coir Board, established under the Coir Industry Act of 1953, governs the development of the coir industry. Their functions range from research and training to market promotion and welfare work for those engaged in this industry. One of the Board’s primary goals is to provide financial support for setting up coir units to stimulate domestic and international market growth.

Significance of Coir

The coir industry provides employment to over seven lakh people, with women accounting for 80% of artisans. The production remains predominantly in the southern coconut-producing states. The export of coir products from India reached a record high during the year 2020-21. Additionally, coir’s eco-friendly nature has garnered it an “Eco Mark” certification by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. Of India.

Coir in Domestic Consumption

India consumes over 50% of the world’s annual coir fiber production. This increasing preference for environmentally friendly products has helped expand the market for coir products domestically and internationally.

Indian Initiatives Related to Coir

Several initiatives have been implemented to promote the use of coir. One of them is the Coir Geo Textile, which is resistant to decay, mold, and moisture, requiring no chemical treatment. Another initiative is the Coir Udyami Yojana, a credit-linked subsidy scheme for setting up coir units. Similarly, the Coir Vikas Yojana aims to develop domestic and export markets, offer skill development and training, empower women, and create employment opportunities.

Coir: A Sustainable Solution

Coir has immense potential in increasing exports and contributing to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It offers a sustainable solution for turning waste into wealth due to its environmentally friendly nature and its role in conserving water and soil. With continued support from government initiatives, it is clear that the future of coir is bright.
